Domain
North and Equatorial Atlantic (28oS to 70oN) including
the Mediterranean Sea, with a horizontal resolution of 1/12o
(mesh size on the order of 6 km on average) and 20 layers in the vertical. Bottom topography is derived from the ETOPO
2.5 quality-controlled data set.
Relaxation to observed monthly T and S (Levitus, 1982) is carried out
in 3o wide buffer zones with relaxation times of 5 days at the
northern and southern wall boundaries (28oS, 70oN)
increasing to 30 days at the inner edge of the buffer zones.
Forcing
- ECMWF 6-hourly forcing from the 1979-1993 reanalysis.
- The fields used in the forcing are wind stress vector,
wind velocity, surface radiation, specific humidity, air temperature, and
precipitation (from COADS).
- The heat flux is calculated using bulk formulae from
surface radiation, air temperature, specific humidity, wind speed and model
SST.
- The fresh water flux consists of E-P (evaporation
obtained from wind speed, specific humidity and model SST, precipitation
from COADS), plus a small relaxation to observed surface salinity.
Output fields
- Surface: daily averaged model variables.
- All layers: 3-daily averages.
Mixing parameterization
- Richardson number dependent diapycnal mixing, plus entrainment parameterization
as in Hallberg (2000).
- thickness diffusion, momentum and temp/salin mixing as in COADS
run.
Integration time
This simulation has been integrated for years 1979-1986.
Computational requirements
Same as in COADS run.
